Attractions & Activities in Papigo Zagori Ioannina

In Zagori one can enjoy activities that do not exist elsewhere. For example, one can hike the mountain of Timfi and walk the Vikos Gorge. It is also possible for those who are interested in rock climbing to do that on the slopes of Astraka mountain and Vikos Gorge. The rivers of the region will completely satisfy lovers of canoeing-kayaking, rafting as well as the adventurous who like skydiving, para-pente or eagle. For those who want to indulge in horse riding, it is worth noting that there is an equestrian club in Kato Pedina. During the summer months you can enjoy swimming in the rivers of Voidomatis and Rogovo.

Ano Pedina
Ano Pedina is a small village with houses made of white stone, stone streets and corners with beautiful views. It is well worth to visit the magnificent stone-build old school, with the rare books of the library of Neophytos Doukas. Other sights include the monastery of the Annunciation with its fortress architecture at the entrance of the village, built in 1786, with excellent frescoes and important relics, St.Dimitrios(1793), with its beautiful wooden iconostasis of the 19th century in the village square and the churches of St.George and Assumption. Also worth visiting is the monastery of Agia Paraskevi (1750), one kilometer from the village which offers beautiful views of mountain Mitsikeli and several sites in nearby regions (Monodéndri-VikosGorge, 6 km and the old bridges of the village of Kipoi, 9km).

Monodéndri is built at an elevation of 1060m, it is worth admiring the village’s mansions, the steep cobbled streets and the churches. At the central square there is the church of St. Athanasios. From there you can continue the path and find yourself in the "Vikos Gorge" and after five hours of hiking you reach the sources of the "Voidomatis River".

Tsepélovo is the largest village in the region of Zagori and the seat of the municipality of Tymfi. It is 48 kilometers from Ioannina, the capital of the prefecture. Two kilometers outside the village, over the gorge of "Vikaki" you find the stone-built Rogovou Monastery, built in 1028. There, Neophytos Doukas wanted to establish a higher education institution "Higher School", but his vision was never realised due to the unrestand the fall of Ali-Pasha. The traditional stone architecture is present in all the homes, the paths and the churches of the village. Prominent sites are the cultural center "Estia", the Church of St.Nicholas which was renovated in 1753 and decorated in 1786 by the master painters from Kapesovo village, the church of the Assumption and Kato Panagia, and several mansions of historic families of the village.

Kapesobo is 43 km from Ioannina and is located at a panoramic position on the edge of Mesarias, at 1100 meters altitude. The visitor can see the large stone houses of the village and visit the church of St.Nicholas (1793). Also of interest in Kapesovois the library, the Folklore Museum (PaschaleiosSchool) and the Cultural Center.

Vitsa is a village of Central Zagori, labeled as a traditional settlement, withp articular historical, architectural and ecological interest, it is one of the most characteristic villages of the Zagori area, an area unique in Greece and Europe for its history, culture and nature. It is located 36 km from the city of Ioannina, on the road to Central Zagori, at the boundaries of the National Park of Vikos-Aoos, at the beginning of the famous Vikos Gorge.

The "Gate of Zagori", located 30km from Ioannina, is the ideal starting point for tours to other villages. In 1943 it was destroyed by the Germans. The ruins of the church of St.Nicholas, reveal the past glamor of the village. It is worth to visit the Monastery of Aspraggeloi at the end of a one hour walking path, overlooking the Ioannina basin. Unique is the sunset viewed from the entrance of the village and the walks on the slopes of the surrounding mountains.

Attractions in the region of Zagori

Kokkori bridge
The bridge of Noutsos (aka Kokkorias) is located in central Zagori, near Koukouli village, 39km from Ioannina, in the river of Voidomatis. Noutsos Kontodimos of Vradeto funded the construction of the bridge, which took the name of his benefactor. The inscription on a black plate indicates 1750 or 1752 as the construction date (Lampridis states Noutsos Karamersinisas the builder of the bridge in 1768). From the main square of the village, one can admire the superb views of the forests and high mountains of Timfi, part of the district of the Central Zagori of the municipality of Tymfi and of East Zagori and follow paved paths leading to clearings in the forest and water springs.

Monastery of Rogovou
In a beautiful location outside Tsepélovo village, 51 km from Ioannina, is the Rogovou monastery that is dedicated to the memory of John the Baptist. After the hostel and other auxiliary spaces, is the church built by Pulcheriain the 11th century. The original church was destroyed and the present church (three-aisledchurch, octagonaldome) was built on its foundation in 1749 as indicated above the entrance. The gilded wood carved iconostasis and the frescoes were made in 1765 by craftsmen from Kapesovo.

The Vikos Gorgeis one of themain attractions of Zagori and the prefecture of Ioannina in general. It is considered as one of the most beautiful canyons in the world and certainly one of the most beautiful in Europe. It is located in the west part of the Vikos-Aoos National Parkand crosses the west and central Zagoria. Its length reaches 12 km, the height of the vertical cliffs are at several points beyond 1100 meters high and its width ranges between 100 and 1000 meters. The canyon was created and is traversed by the River Voidomatis, which has water only seasonally. The Vikos Gorge stretches between the villages Tsepélovo and Kledonia from the central Zagori until shortly before the village of Konitsa. Also near the canyon are the villages of Kapesovo, Koukouli, Kipoi, Vradeto, Monodéndri and Aristi.

Skala of Vradeto
A stone staircase on the mountain side connects the two villages of Vradetoand Kapesovo. This is known as "Skala of Vradeto", a true masterpiece of the architecture of Epirus, with total length of 1200 meters. In the regionof Zagori there are three other similar stairs, the stairs of Vradetou however is considered the most beautiful of all.
